Best Magnesium Without Citric Acid

Magnesium supplements from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database whose labels list no citric acid, ranked by how completely the label discloses what is in the product.

Why People Avoid Citric Acid

Citric acid is added to powders and effervescent magnesium products for tartness and to help them dissolve. Almost all commercial citric acid is made by fermenting sugar with the mold Aspergillus niger.

Some people report reactions to manufactured citric acid, and others avoid it because of mold sensitivity or reflux; controlled evidence for these reactions is limited, but the preference is common. It is also acidic enough to bother some people with dental erosion or heartburn.

This page excludes added citric acid only. Magnesium citrate itself stays in the list, because it is the magnesium salt rather than added acid; if you want to avoid citrate altogether, look for glycinate, malate, or chloride in the Form column.

Open Supplement Search, choose the Magnesium tab, and enter "citric acid" under Must not contain. This page also requires a listed other-ingredients panel, since a label without one cannot show what it leaves out, so its count runs lower than the search page's.
