Why People Avoid Magnesium Stearate
Magnesium stearate is not a form of supplemental magnesium. It is a flow agent, a magnesium salt of stearic acid, added in small amounts so powder runs smoothly through capsule and tablet machines. It contributes almost no magnesium.
At the amounts used it is considered safe, and claims that it blocks nutrient absorption or suppresses immune cells come from cell studies that do not reflect oral use. People avoid it mostly as a clean-label preference, or because it is often derived from palm or cottonseed oil.
Products without it typically use rice flour, rice hulls, or no flow agent at all.
