Why People Avoid Folic Acid
Folic acid is the synthetic form behind neural tube defect prevention, and it is the right choice for anyone planning pregnancy. It must be reduced by DHFR, a slow enzyme in humans, so doses above about 200 to 400 mcg leave unmetabolized folic acid circulating; whether that matters is unknown.
People who prefer to avoid it, including some with MTHFR variants, choose multivitamins that use L-methylfolate or folinic acid instead. Methylfolate is the main circulating form and needs neither DHFR nor MTHFR.
This list keeps only labels that state a folate form, so a product listing plain "folate" cannot hide folic acid. Check whether the amount is given in mcg DFE or mcg of the compound.
