Why People Avoid Iron
Men and postmenopausal women rarely need supplemental iron, and taking it without a deficiency adds risk without benefit. Iron accumulates because the body has no active way to excrete it, which matters most for the roughly 1 in 300 people of Northern European descent with hereditary hemochromatosis.
Iron in a multivitamin also causes constipation and nausea in some people, and it competes with zinc and calcium for absorption. Menstruating women, pregnant women, and people with documented deficiency are the groups who usually benefit from iron.
Most products labeled for men or for adults over 50 leave iron out. Iron oxide used as a tablet colorant is not counted as an iron ingredient here.
