Best Probiotics Without Prebiotics

Probiotics from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database whose labels list no prebiotic fibers such as inulin or FOS, ranked by how completely the label discloses what is in the product.

Why People Avoid Prebiotics

Many probiotics add prebiotic fibers such as inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), galactooligosaccharides (GOS), or chicory root to feed the bacteria. These are fermented quickly in the colon and are high-FODMAP, so they commonly cause gas and bloating, especially in IBS.

For people following a low-FODMAP diet, or anyone whose symptoms worsen on a combined product, a probiotic without added prebiotics is the cleaner test of whether the strain helps. The amount of prebiotic in a capsule is small, but sensitive people notice it.

If you want fiber, partially hydrolyzed guar gum is the best-tolerated fermentable option and can be taken separately.

1,236 of 2,146 on-market labels named as probiotics with an other-ingredients list list no inulin, FOS, GOS, chicory root, or other prebiotic fiber.

Ranked by label detail (stated amounts, named forms, a complete other-ingredients list), then by fewest other ingredients. The ranking reflects what the label discloses, not product testing, purity, or efficacy.

Search All Probiotics

Open Supplement Search, choose the Probiotics tab, and enter "inulin, oligosaccharide, chicory" under Must not contain. This page also requires a listed other-ingredients panel, since a label without one cannot show what it leaves out, so its count runs lower than the search page's.
