Why People Avoid Soy
Soy turns up in probiotics as a growth medium ingredient, as soy lecithin or soybean oil in softgels and chewables, and occasionally as soy fiber. Soy is one of the nine major US food allergens.
Most people with soy allergy tolerate highly refined soy oil and lecithin, but those with severe allergy, or who avoid soy for other reasons, want it off the label entirely. As with dairy, growth media are not always disclosed, so a clean ingredient list is a starting point.
Because the filter reads every mention, a label whose allergen statement names the ingredient, even to say the product is free of it, is also dropped. The list errs toward leaving products out.
