Best Protein Powder Without Soy

Protein powders from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database whose labels list no soy, ranked by how completely the label discloses what is in the product.

Why People Avoid Soy

Soy is one of the nine major food allergens under US law. In protein powders it shows up two ways: as soy protein isolate, the protein source itself, and as soy lecithin, an emulsifier added so the powder mixes without clumping.

Highly refined soy lecithin contains very little soy protein, and many people with soy allergy tolerate it, but anyone with a significant allergy should avoid both. Others avoid soy over phytoestrogen concerns or because they limit soy for thyroid reasons; the evidence for harm at these amounts is weak, but the preference is common.

Sunflower lecithin is the usual substitute and appears on many of these labels. Because the filter reads every mention, a label whose allergen statement names the ingredient, even to say the product is free of it, is also dropped. The list errs toward leaving products out.

1,618 of 2,413 on-market protein powder labels with an other-ingredients list name their protein source and mention no soy anywhere on the label.

Ranked by label detail (stated amounts, named forms, a complete other-ingredients list), then by fewest other ingredients. The ranking reflects what the label discloses, not product testing, purity, or efficacy.

Open Supplement Search, choose the Protein Powder tab, and turn on the "Soy" chip under Exclude products containing. This page also requires a listed other-ingredients panel, since a label without one cannot show what it leaves out, so its count runs lower than the search page's.
